Are fires or barbeques allowed at the picnic areas or campgrounds?

Fires and barbeques are subject to strict rules in the Shire of Waroona, especially during the Restricted Burning Periods (1 October–30 November and 1 April–15 May) and the Prohibited Burning Period (1 December–31 March).

During these times:

  • All open fires are banned, including campfires, fire pits, and some types of barbeques.

  • Solid fuel fires (e.g. wood or charcoal) are not permitted on public or private land when the fire danger rating is high, extreme or catastrophic, or during the Prohibited Burning Period.

  • Gas or electric barbeques may be allowed only if:

    • The flame is fully enclosed within the appliance.

    • The appliance is placed at least 5 metres away from flammable materials.

    • It is used in an approved area or facility.

Several popular picnic spots in the Shire—such as Drakesbrook Weir, Waroona Dam, and some local parks—are equipped with free electric barbeques for public use. These provide a safe alternative during periods of fire restrictions.

Important: Always check current fire danger ratings at www.emergency.wa.gov.au, local signage, or contact the Shire of Waroona before lighting any fire. Fire regulations can change based on weather conditions and local alerts.
