Fishing

From the calm fresh waters of Drakesbrook Weir to the vast expanse of Preston Beach, anglers of all ages and skill levels can enjoy casting a line amongst some of the region’s most scenic backdrops. Whether you’re after a peaceful morning by the water or a fun family outing, fishing in Waroona is a relaxing and rewarding way to connect with nature.

Preston Beach

A renowned spot for beach fishing, Preston Beach offers a laid-back coastal experience perfect for anglers of all ages and skill levels. Nestled between the Indian Ocean and Yalgorup National Park, this peaceful seaside town is known for its long stretches of beach, 4wd access, and excellent opportunities to catch tailor, herring, whiting, and even the occasional mulloway or salmon during seasonal runs. Whether you’re casting from the shore at sunrise or trying your luck at dusk, Preston Beach is a top spot for relaxed, beachside fishing with a stunning natural backdrop.

Drakesbrook Weir

Drakesbrook Weir offers a tranquil and family-friendly experience set against the scenic backdrop of forested hills and calm freshwater. Located just a short drive from the Waroona town centre, the weir is stocked annually with rainbow and brown trout at the Waroona Troutfest, making it a popular spot for freshwater anglers. Redfin perch are also commonly caught here, and during the open season, licensed fishers can try their luck at catching marron. Whether you're fly fishing, casting a line from the shore, or teaching the kids to fish, Drakesbrook Weir offers a peaceful environment with picnic areas, swimming spots, and plenty of open space to enjoy a day by the water.

Note: Motorised boats (excluding electric motors) are prohibited.

Waroona Dam (Lake Navarino)

Fishing at Waroona Dam is a favourite pastime for locals and visitors alike, offering a picturesque setting and a variety of freshwater species to target. The dam is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout and is also home to redfin perch, providing great fishing opportunities throughout the year. During the designated season, licensed anglers can also fish for marron in its clear waters. With 4wd access around parts of the shoreline, it’s easy to find a quiet spot to cast a line, making Waroona Dam a great destination for both relaxed family outings and dedicated fishing trips.

Lane Poole Reserve & Nanga Brook

Fishing in Lane Poole Reserve offers a serene and nature-rich experience in the heart of the jarrah forest. These tranquil waterways are ideal for freshwater fishing, with species such as redfin perch commonly found in the Murray River and surrounding brooks. The peaceful setting, crystal-clear streams, and shaded banks make it a perfect spot for a quiet day of casting or teaching the kids to fish. While trout are occasionally encountered, it’s the natural beauty and calm atmosphere that make fishing in Lane Poole Reserve and Nanga Brook so rewarding.

Lake Clifton

Fishing around Lake Clifton offers a tranquil experience surrounded by natural beauty. While the lake itself is part of the Yalgorup National Park and is known for its unique thrombolites (ancient living rock-like structures), recreational fishing is not permitted in the lake to protect this fragile ecosystem. However, the surrounding coastal areas, including nearby Peel-Harvey Estuary offer excellent fishing opportunities for species like bream, herring, tailor and whiting, and is also a popular spot for the seasonal blue swimmer crab. Always check local guidelines and fishing regulations before casting a line.

Yalgorup National Park

Fishing within Yalgorup National Park is limited due to its focus on conservation, particularly around sensitive areas like Lake Clifton and Lake Preston, which are home to rare ecosystems and birdlife. While the lakes themselves are not open to fishing to protect their ecological integrity, nearby coastal areas such as Preston Beach—which borders the park—offer excellent fishing spots. Always follow park signage and regulations to help preserve this unique natural environment.
